It’s that time of the year again! The Finals of the Raman Young Science Innovator award are here! They will be held on the grounds of Panchavati, Sir CV Raman’s old home in Bangalore, once again. The Finals will be spread across 2 days, February 1 and 2, 2025.

All participants need to be in Bangalore for the Finals and be available from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, 1 February 2025 and 10am to 6pm on Sunday, 2 February 2025. All outstation participants are also requested to make their own travel and stay arrangements accordingly.

We would strongly recommend that you bring your innovation submitted during the preliminary stage to display during the finals, at the Exhibition on Sunday, 2 February. Our finalists, judges, and guests would love to see working models built by your child. However, if it is too unwieldy or inconvenient to travel with your model/experiment, please bring any other innovation you have made over the last year that can be easily carried and displayed at the exhibition.

Schedule for the Day

  1. Only contestants are allowed on campus on 1 February from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Parents/Guardians could use this time to see Malleswaram Market, or take a metro to Lalbagh and see the world-famous Botanical Gardens, or other places of interest nearby. They may return at 5.00pm to pick up their ward.
  2. Judges’ interaction will take place, serially, in designated areas of Panchavati from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM on 2 February and will not be accessible to parents. Judges will spend about 10-12 minutes with each contestant individually.
  3. Exhibits (preferably from the Preliminaries) will be arranged on tables from 10:00 AM on 2 February – please DO NOT bring your Exhibits on 1 February. As and when the contestant completes her/his interaction with the judges, the innovation made in the Finals will also be displayed on the table.
  4. The finals will be open for general interaction from 10:00 AM, 2 February, onwards. Feel free to invite your family and friends to the event.

What to Expect in the Final

The Finals will be a separate event, where your previous entry holds no bearing. The finalists in three age groups will be given a problem statement, related to an activity or topic, for which they will need to develop a hands-on innovation on-the-spot to solve the problem. The innovation will be judged by a panel of eminent scientists and teachers. You will have two hours to create your innovation on Saturday, 1 February afternoon. The following day, on 2 February, you will have sufficient time to interact with an eminent panel of scientists – who will be the judges for the day – to discuss your work. The day will culminate in a short presentation function.

You will not be required to or allowed to bring any materials from home or elsewhere to use during the Finals. The use of phones and books by children will also be prohibited. Group work will not be allowed, nor will any help from parents/guests or any other adult be accepted. The RYSI team may use their discretion in providing help for certain tasks (e.g. working with a candle), especially to the younger children. Each child should bring a drinking water bottle with them; there will be filling stations and ample drinking water available for refills in Panchavati.

  • 1. Jayant Murthy – Senior Faculty, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore; PhD, Johns Hopkins University, USA; worked at the Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA), Maryland, USA, specialist in Space Astronomy with broad interests.

  • 2. Dwarakanath K.S – Raman Research Institute (RRI), Bangalore; PhD from IISc, Main area of work Extragalactic astronomy using techniques of Radio-astronomy.

  • 3. DCV Mallik – Retired Faculty, IIA; Main area of work Interstellar Matter and Planetary Nebulae. PhD, Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, USA. Senior author of the biography of Sir KS Krishnan; edited books on astronomy, currently working in the field of History of Science.

  • 4. Mousumi Das, Faculty at IIA; previously at RRI & Univ. of Maryland, USA; PhD, IISc. Focus of interest in galactic and extra-galactic astronomy. Gives numerous outreach and public lecture talks around the world, to professional and budding astronomers!

  • 5. Proteep Mallik – School of Arts & Sciences (SAS), Azim Premji University (APU), Bangalore. Extensive experience in the field of optical engineering with firms such as Pacific Biosciences and KLA-Tencor in the USA. Graduate studies at Optical Sciences Center, Univ of Arizona, USA.

  • 6. Sekhar Soorianarayanan, former teacher at The Valley School (TVS), KFI, Bangalore. Hands-on science teacher for kids of all ages. Previously at GE, Bangalore. Graduate Studies at Texas Tech. Vast experience and passionate interest in creating hands-on learning tools and modules for middle and high school students of science.

  • 7. Srikanta Dani, Faculty at SAS, APU. PhD from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. A plant biologist with a background in earth sciences and genetic engineering. Before joining APU, worked at the National Research Council of Italy (in Florence) for several years which included a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. Works mainly on volatile organic biochemistry, photosynthesis physiology, plant reproduction and senescence.

  • 8. TN Avinash, Teacher at TVS; BSc (St. Joseph’s) and MSc (Madurai Kamraj) in Microbio and Biotech, respectively. PhD, East Tennessee State Uni, USA in Biochem. Teaches chemistry, EVS and biology at The Valley School, with a focus on hands-on experiential learning. Also has research experience in Neurobiology in Germany and industry experience in bioinformatics in Bangalore.

  • 9. Kinjal Roy, final year PhD student in the Astronomy and Astrophysics group at the Raman Research Institute. Research topic is the reprocessing emission from X-Ray binary sources.

  • 10. Anand Kurien, taught school children for 15 years before joining Azim Premji University. At the university he teaches Physics Pedagogy, Maths and Music. Anand’s greatest passions are conveying physics, maths and music to an uninitiated audience. He is an avid enthusiast of technology, maths, and astronomy and he is fascinated by history and aviation.

  • 11. Kaustubh Rau, been a science teacher at the school and undergraduate level for the last 15 years. He is interested in understanding our relationship with the natural world and currently works on documenting lakes in Anekal taluk. Currently at School or Arts and Sciences, APU

  • 12. Vibhor Goel, Vibhor is an experienced engineering leader with over 20 years at multinational companies like Cisco, IBM, and Siemens. Passionate about using technology for skill development and education, he worked with Thinktac and Anudip. He focuses on creating self-driven learners and bridging the digital divide. Vibhor holds an engineering degree from REC Calicut and an MBA from XLRI Jamshedpur.

  • 13. T Sivarani, Dean of Faculty at IIA. Stellar astronomer, with 3 decades of experience. PhD from IIA as well, followed by post-doc stints in Montpelier and Trieste

  • 14. Arun Thampan, Currently a teacher of Physics at the master’s level and researcher in Astrophysics at St Joseph’s University. Previously, entrepreneur: co-founder and CIO of a startup (Greenchimes). MSc (Physics) from Bombay IIT; PhD at IIA and post-docs at IUCAA and Trieste

  • 15. Jayant Joshi, Solar Physicist and Assistant Professor at IIA. His research focuses on solar magnetism, spectropolarimetry, solar flares, magnetic reconnection, and chromospheric dynamics. PhD from the Max Planck Institute, Göttingen. Post-docs at Stockholm, Oslo and National Solar Observatory, USA.
